The Skatalites

The Skatalites (or The Ska-Tali) is a band of Jamaican ska. The name is formed by mixing the word with the word Satellites Ska.

The Skatalites are regarded as the creators of ska, and also influenced the rocksteady and reggae, his musical descendants derived from the traditional styles of Jamaica.

His early ska recordings dating back to June 1964, but previously worked as a studio band for a long time to record / Studio One label, recording mainly rhythm and blues. The original band members got their training Music from the jazz musicians of Jamaica. Therefore, although there were inspired by sounds from the United States of America (mainly boogie woogie) and African sounds, the music of the Skatalites themselves contain many elements of jazz.

The original members were the Skatalites Don Drummond (trombone), Tommy McCook (saxophone, flute), Roland Alfonso (saxophone), Lester Sterling (saxophone), Dizzy Johnny "Moore (trumpet), Lloyd Brevet (bass), Lloyd Knnibb (drums), Jackie Mittoo (piano and organ), Jah Jerry Haines (guitar).

The Skatalites recorded together with soundsystems at Studio One, they were a studio band. They became very popular in Jamaica, since the majority of artists like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and the Toots & The Maytals recorded with them. The original band broke up in 1965, the group leader Don Drummond murdered his wife and was admitted to the psychiatric center from Bellevue, where he died two years later.

The band resurfaced as a group reformed in 1983 and currently still playing follow, with the majority of the members replaced.

The band was nominated twice for Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 1996 and 1997.
